Advancements in technology have profoundly impacted the entertainment landscape, with television shows, movies, and video games becoming ever-present, resulting in digital formats taking center stage in many narratives. This trend is evident in the development of these various media formats, such as novels inspired by films or vice versa, as well as video games adapted from other formats, showcasing how narratives have evolved and been reimagined across multiple media platforms. A perfect example of this dynamic interplay between different forms of media is the beloved saga of Harry Potter.

The Harry Potter franchise has developed many different sources of content over the years. Beginning in 1997 with the release of the first book, the Harry Potter franchise has become one of the biggest and highest grossing ever. Besides just the book series, movies were made to reflect each book as well as a prequel series, a video game was released, there is an entire Harry Potter world in Universal Studios in Florida, and a popup exhibit that travels around the world.

Books serve as excellent media forms for conveying information and sparking readers’ imaginations, allowing them to envision the unfolding events. However, books often fall short in capturing social cues, emotions, and tone. In contrast, movies provide a visual format where actors can bring characters to life, using their expressions, tones, and gestures to convey depth and emotion. This ability to immerse viewers contributes significantly to a more engaging and fulfilling experience. While movies can reel in fans and bring books to life, movies often need to condense or omit details found in books, resulting in a limited exploration of characters and settings. This can however, be both a positive and negative aspect of movies. Details may be forced to be left out of the movie, but creating a digital format that allows for a book that would take days or even weeks to read and condensing the narrative into a few hours makes it more digestible to viewers. The production of movies also comes with substantial costs, often running into the hundreds of millions of dollars. For instance, the Harry Potter film series required budgets ranging from 100 million to 250 million dollars per movie. As a result of high production costs, movie tickets and streaming service subscriptions also have high price tags. Accessing movies typically involves purchasing a ticket to a theater or subscribing to a streaming service, both of which can be costly. Although their affordability can be hindered by these significant costs, movies are widely accessible and often considered the most accessible form of entertainment. Movies are released worldwide, allowing for a larger audience. Having such a large audience means a diverse audience. As such, movies are an excellent media format since they can be translated into many different languages. Overall, movies are agreeably the most effective and accessible format for entertainment.

While the digital version of Harry Potter has primarily been the movie series, the video game that was recently released, Hogwarts Legacy, brought many new fans to the Harry Potter universe and gave old fans something to look forward to. Within two weeks the game sold over 12 million copies, and by late 2023 became the most popular game of the year. The game was such a success; however, it did come with its limitations and drawbacks. Diving into the world of Harry Potter, the game allows players to have an interactive experience and learn many things that would have been taught in Hogwarts. This allows players to explore the world of Harry Potter at their own pace, make choices that impact the narrative, and engage in activities like learning spells and brewing potions, offering a deeper level of immersion and personalization than passive movie viewing. The game also benefits from the expansive nature of video games, providing a larger scope for exploration, side quests, and discovering hidden secrets within Hogwarts and beyond, which movies cannot fully capture.  However, Hogwarts Legacy also faces limitations such as technical constraints that may impact graphics or gameplay complexity, as well as the challenge of maintaining continuity and consistency with the established Harry Potter traditions while introducing new elements. This was seen as a problem with the game, as none of the characters from the movie or book series were used in the gameplay. Additionally, while movies have a fixed runtime and narrative structure, the replayability of Hogwarts Legacy may vary depending on the player’s engagement and desire to explore alternate paths or endings. Overall, Hogwarts Legacy offers a unique and interactive experience within the world of Harry Potter, complementing the storytelling of the movies while providing its own set of affordances and limitations inherent to the gaming format.

While digital formats are fantastic for making content accessible worldwide at any time, nothing quite compares to the hands-on, in-person interaction that leads to a truly fulfilling experience. One notable example of this is the Harry Potter franchise’s Diagon Alley at Universal Studios theme park. This immersive area allows visitors to stroll through the bustling streets of Diagon Alley, the heart of the wizarding world. Every detail, from the replicated stores and restaurants to the interactive experiences like wand selection at Olivander’s or thrilling rides through Gringotts, caters to the desires of every Harry Potter enthusiast. However, as with any physical experience, there are inherent limitations. The cost of creating such a marvel totaled a staggering four hundred million dollars, and admission alone exceeds one hundred dollars per person, not including expenses for food, beverages, and souvenirs that range from a few dollars to well over a hundred. Moreover, the location restriction of the park being in Orlando, Florida, adds significant travel expenses, making it a luxury accessible to only those with the means to afford it. Despite these barriers, Diagon Alley offers a level of immersion and engagement that surpasses what books and movies can provide, making it an invaluable addition to the Harry Potter universe for those fortunate enough to experience it firsthand.

The Harry Potter franchise has long been celebrated for its ability to offer fans immersive experiences in the magical world of wizards and witches. One such avenue for this immersion is through a popup exhibition, which adds yet another layer of depth to the overall experience. This exhibition provides fans with a unique opportunity to physically interact with the world of Harry Potter by granting them access to actual props and costumes used in the iconic films. This hands-on experience not only allows fans to see these items up close but also to touch and feel them, creating a deeper emotional connection and a sense of authenticity that cannot be fully captured on screen alone. Furthermore, the exhibition guides visitors through specific aspects of the wizarding world, offering a curated journey that enhances their appreciation for the intricate details and craftsmanship behind the Harry Potter universe.

In comparison to the movies, which utilize cinematic storytelling and visual effects to bring the magic to life on the big screen, the exhibition provides a more tangible and interactive encounter. While the movies offer a passive viewing experience, allowing audiences to witness the magic unfold before them, the exhibition encourages active exploration and engagement with the authentic artifacts and rich traditions of Harry Potter. However, it’s important to note that the exhibition also comes with its set of limitations. Its static nature means that it lacks the dynamic narrative progression and immersive cinematic experience of the movies. Additionally, accessibility to the exhibition may be limited by factors such as its physical location and the cost of tickets, potentially excluding some fans who may not be able to attend in person.

The Harry Potter popup exhibition in New York City is the perfect example to showcase both the affordances and limitations of such an experience. Being a temporary popup location, it generates excitement and exclusivity among visitors, creating a sense of urgency and novelty that adds to the overall attraction. The exhibition’s focus on immersive experiences, such as interactive displays, themed rooms, and photo opportunities with iconic props, allows fans to engage with the magic of Harry Potter in a hands-on and memorable way. However, the popup nature of the exhibition also presents challenges, notably in terms of limited availability and duration. Tickets may sell out quickly, and although the exhibition has multiple locations around the world simultaneously,  the short lifespan of the exhibition means that not everyone who wishes to attend may have the opportunity to do so. Additionally, the temporary setup may result in a more condensed experience compared to permanent exhibitions, potentially limiting the depth of exploration and interaction with the Wizarding World’s rich lore and details. Overall, while the Harry Potter popup exhibition in New York offers a captivating and immersive experience for fans, showcasing the enduring appeal and magic of the beloved franchise in a unique and limited-time setting, it also underscores the trade-offs between physical interaction and the cinematic magic of the movies.

Advancements in technology have undoubtedly transformed entertainment, shaping how narratives are presented across various media formats like television, movies, and video games. The Harry Potter franchise stands as a testament to this evolution, showcasing its narrative across multiple platforms, each with its own affordances and limitations. From the immersive cinematic experience of the movies to the interactive exploration offered by video games like Hogwarts Legacy, fans have been treated to diverse ways of experiencing the magical world. Similarly, physical experiences like the Harry Potter popup exhibition in New York City and the Diagon Alley attraction at Universal Studios provide hands-on interactions, providing a sense of authenticity that digital formats may struggle to replicate. However, these physical experiences also come with limitations such as limited availability, duration, and accessibility challenges due to location and cost. Despite these trade-offs, each format contributes to the overall richness of the Harry Potter universe, offering fans unique opportunities to engage and immerse themselves in the magic of this beloved franchise.
